Memoirs of A McGeisha

"Until Hollywood starts to view Asia as a place of very diverse cultures and people, and not simply as a place of exotic fantasy, Asian actors, particularly women, will suffer under the burden of stereotyping. They will find it hard if not impossible to move beyond roles in Orientalist films such as this."

Sad to say, good to know, I watched Memoirs of A Geisha one week before the release here. Managed to get the DVD from an unnamed source. So far, I haven't gave any positive comments yet, because I see no need to. I've discussed with friends regarding the plot, casts and most importantly, a serious mis-interpretation of Geishas. For those who had watched the documentaries about Geisha on Channel NewsAsia will know what I'm talking about.

A simple FAQ on Geishas - complete with photos

An article I read in papers today further supported my case. Andrew Lee criticized the show and brought out many points that I couldn't agree more with! I'm not the 1st one to blog about this article so I'll just leave you to read their blog. I couldn't find Andrew Lee's article in the online Financial Times, so kindly read them in the blogs.

Come to think of it, do you still remember the cartoons you watched when you were young? I'm not feeling pissed or what, but just wana share it as a light-hearted joke. Nothing intended. So, how does the chinese usually look like? Ok, visualize this, someone knocks on the door. A chinese guy holding a lantern opens the door. How does he look like? Can you see his eyes? Or are they just 2 slits below the forehead?! And the teeth? Buck-toothed like Ronaldo?! Go down further the face, do you see a beard? Ya! There are variations but basically, the basics don't change... Here's a web cartoon.. http://www.asianweek.com/2000_07_27/news2_mrwong.html

You can find a rather interesting test to take in the link above.
Can you differentiate Chinese, Japanese and Koreans? Try... I got 12 upon 18.. Slightly above average..

Sunny Complain?

Wahahaha... Weather's been kinda sunny since Friday... with occasional cloudy skies... As I'm writing this... grey clouds are slowly gathering.. ready for a Sunday evening party... Just a few hours ago, the sun was still in full force... piercing the skins of those who stayed in the open..

Just curious... think about this.. since Friday until now.. Have you complained about the hot weather? Maybe you've been praising the sun... but in between maybe 10 praises.. did you even utter one complain? It could be as simple as "Wa kaoz... very hot..."

I sure did. How ironic right? So, what do we want? Rainy day or sunny day? Or in between? But we all know, things aren't as simple as it is....

Week 02 - Life So far....

OMG... Week 2 of school has ended... I was still singing songs, talking cock, la kopi, watching movies during holidays... and that didn't seem too long ago... or did it? 3 weeks... Many things can happen... being created.. and destroyed.. Anyway, the important thing is, nothing is...

K-boxing with the dudes and dudettes of SFH 2 during holiday, after a fruitful trip to rebuild lives in Thailand!

Celebrated New Year with a lunch with my Poly friends, 2 korean and a hongkong exchange students... Ga Yeon and Min Jae cooked Korean New Year rice cake.. and

Ga Yeon.. You sure you can cook? Don't poison us!

Ok.. back to school.... Week 1 of school, New Year day... no good... week 2... Hari Raya... no good... week 5.. Chinese New Year, except for ang pows... no good... more make up lessons!! I cannot endure anymore irregularities for the moment.... Luckily, Gillian and I volunteered for the YMCA event to bring a bunch of korean students on a half day english assignment treasure hunt that took place during week 2... This photo courtesy of her... http://extremeliciously-dumb.blogspot.com/

Annyong haseyo... Welcome to Singapore!

This was a pretty good experience because I actually went to places I wouldn't have gone or knew existed! Looking forward to the english tuition too... meanwhile.. enjoy the video of these 2 weird korean gals singing... apparently, they're quite famous.. appearing in different variety shows in Korea... haha...

This classic Korean MV is one that'll most probably remain in your memory for as long as you can remember... Btw, this guy was the same guy in Stairway To Heaven who donated his eyes to the one he loved.. history repeating itself.. haha!!

SMU Rugby

SMU Rugby @ Bishan Park. I'm still quite clean (extreme right).. haha..

1st training of SMU Rugby was carried out at Bishan Park instead of the assigned MountBatten field due to bad pitch condition. Turned out to be a blessing of disguise because I live nearer to Bishan! heheh! Went through a mud therapy and happily acquired 2 blisters on both heels... damn boots.. they weren't even new boots... and mind you.. I was wearing socks too.. wtf?! Anw, gotta settle the logistics stuffs. Did a bad job as i didn't make sure there were enough size 5 balls for training.

Anw, attendance was pretty decent, although I wished there were more Backs in the team. If nothing goes wrong, competition will commence in February. This will be SMU Rugby's 1st official major contact rugby competition if i'm not wrong. Really looking to it. Meanwhile, who has any great remedy for a blister quick-heal?! Besides chopping of my feet! (Don't think I don't know what you guys are thinking.. heheh..)

Btw, anyone SMU guys who are reading this and would like to play for SMU Rugby.. you are most welcomed! C'mon.. and ladies.. if you are interested, you can join SMU Ladies Touch team. Alternatively, you can still join the guys team... heheh...

Lights Out? Black out...

Ok, who gets to wear sleepwear when they go to Ministry of Sound this coming Thursday? Unfortunately, I guess only 7 students from SMU will have this special privilege (if you call it a privilege)... Check them out @ http://lights-out-bash.blogspot.com/

Sleepwear modelling contest for SMU gals... cool.. Who'd have thought of such thing right? No wonder they say SMU is different.. well, maybe?... so you wanna vote too? Just follow the link on the 1st page of the event's blog..

Ok, who did you vote for? Wanna share? Actually, I couldn't make up my mind... they all look the same to me.. And, I'm not going for the bash too.. Why? Because the SMU gal whom I wish would wear a nice "pyjamas" and walk around instead didn't join!! Why?!! Haha... You must be wondering who.. Give you a clue.. she's a girl... haha... Of course... Wait a minute... just thought of something... are we voting for the models or the sleepwear?! wahahahaha... =D

Happy New Year 2006

No, this isn't about resolutions and how I intend to achieve them... Just wanna share what I went through in December... Had a great trip to Phuket for community service... Worked really hard under the sun to build houses for the tsunami victims... Now I finally felt what the construction workers in Singapore go through. Like Nicholas said, we'll learn to appreciate the banglas more then before!

Taken with my camera. No work photos. Will post them when I get it. Meanwhile, enjoy some photos from the drinking game sessions, etc...

Went for my first off shore fishing on Fri.... Rented a bumboat with Wong, his friends & Co.. went out to the seas off Changi.... Luckily didnt get any seasick... Caught my first Chermin.... It was an excellent trip..

But then, in term of size & weight, still can't fight with the cute Mekong catfishes I got at Bangkok last year... This bugger here weighed about 15kg if I'm not wrong.. In case you're wondering.. caught & released.... Next up.. keeping my fingers crossed for sailfishes @ Rompin in 2006/07...

2006... 年年有鱼。。。 May it be a great year for all of us... Happy New Year!! :)
